Remote data logging has arrived...

Portable data loggers have many advantages over fixed metering - they're very cost effective, easy to hook up and, well, portable, but they can be expensive and time consuming to download if they have to be located a long way from home.

The additional flexibility offered by a remote download capability is clear to see, and the potential savings in time, money and carbon are equally obvious, so we're very pleased to announce that any SPC logger is now also a remote download device.

What is it? The SPC DTM is a GPRS based add-on unit that allows you to download your SPC loggers remotely, and review the data just as if you had the logger on your desk. It ships complete with everything you need including a pre-paid SIM card if required.

All you have to do is plug it into your SPC logger.

How does it work? Technically speaking, the SPC DTM is an intelligent USB master/slave device, with integral GPRS modem configured for ftp upload... but to put it in more friendly language, it uses the mobile phone network to connect to the web, and a USB link to connect to any of our range of SPC loggers. Once both these connections are present, it can extract data from the loggers and send it to a website for the user access from any web connected device.

It works like this:

The unit is programmed by the user with a secure web address (actually an ftp location) using our PowerPackPro software (shipped with all SPC units) along with a download schedule, which takes only a few moments, and then it's ready to go.

When it is connected via its USB cable to an SPC logger (Mini, Pro or Pulse) it goes to work immediately. It checks to see which type of logger it is connected to and then checks that it can connect via the mobile network to its pre-programmed website. When these checks are completed the status l.e.d.s confirm the DTM's 'OK' condition, and it can be left to do its job. At the scheduled time, the DTM will then download the logger and transfer the data to the web. This is repeated for as long as the schedule lasts.

Using our PowerPackPro software, the logger data can now be accessed from the web location with a click of the mouse, and processed in exactly the same way as if the logger had been downloaded direct to the PC.

The DTM has been designed to interface seamlessly with all SPC loggers, and the website used for remote data storage. The unit automatically verifies its logger and web connections, and clearly indicates its 'ready' status. It also displays the mobile network signal strength so that the operator can be 100% confident of a successful survey.

Programming the DTM is easy, as the only user-defined elements are your ftp site address and log-on credentials, and your desired download schedule (e.g. every 24hrs). There is even an auto-test function to check that the web link is working. Recovering data from a remote logger is simple too… The software stores all programmed ftp locations and checks them for new data on start up, or whenever commanded by the user. Any new files are downloaded and saved exactly as if the logger had been directly connected to the PC.

Once data have been downloaded from the logger or from an ftp location, PowerPackPro does a lot more than simple graphing. The graphs are fully 'zoomable' in both axes, and have automatic scaling so your results are always effectively presented. Our unique task-oriented download sequence wizard ensures that whatever the utility being measured, cost, energy and carbon equivalent values are always automatically created where applicable. The DTM is suitable for any data compatible SIM and ships as standard with no card fitted. However, if required it can be supplied with a fully installed and tested prepaid SIM card from Vodafone, which provides plenty of download capacity at a very competitive price. You pay one annual charge and enjoy 100MB of data transfer capability per month for a whole year. It means that you can start using your DTM as soon as you receive it, with no data charges to pay for a full 12 months*

FTP SITE

The DTM uses the web to transfer data to a server (ftp site) from where it can be easily accessed and downloaded by any web-connected PC. In fact it’s so easy that our PowerPackPro does it automatically in most cases, but what if you don’t have an ftp site already set up? Fortunately that’s easy too because you can use ours, or rather you can rent a secure area on the Elcomponent ftp server which provides a hefty 100MB of file space for your uploaded data.

DTM - How It Works

Simplicity in the field is an important Elcomponent brand value, as we know that our customers don't have the time to be reaching for the User Manual every time they get an instrument out of its bag. The DTM presented more of a challenge than usual in this respect, as it is by definition a clever piece of kit that has to do several things simultaneously to work correctly. Furthermore it is reliant on the mobile phone network, so aspects such as signal strength indication are critical. However, by utilising a simple 'step-by-step' indication process using the front panel l.e.d.s, the product remains simple and intuitive to use, and provides the operator with an easily applied verification procedure for additional peace of mind.
